Desktop Virtual Reality module, February-May 2009

You are now viewing one of three web portals used to manage the final year (Level 6) module in Virtual Reality in the Faculty of Computing, Information Systems, and Mathematics, Kingston University, UK.  Each of these portals has a separate and distinct function, as follows:

  • this site.  A WordPress blog, this is the teaching hub in which the main teaching and reference materials (classified directories, short tutorials, lecture notes) for this module are published.  More information, including the syllabus outline, are published on the About page.
  • the vortiCISM blog.  Another WordPress blog (for which I’ve inserted a RSS feed in the sidebar, right), this was launched initially in the summer of 2007 as documentation of a short feasibility study into the use of Second Life as an appropriate and effective platform for e-learning.  So much has it grown in content and scope since its inception that it should now be regarded as, among other things, the repository of most Second Life learning materials for this VR course.
  • the vortiCISM wiki. I’d wanted to create a collaborative area in which students (and staff) could document their own exploratory work and play in Second Life: report interesting places they’d visited, useful tips and tricks they’d learned, gadgets and devices (e.g. HUDs or building tools) they’d found useful, in-world talks they’d attended and meetings they’d participated in, write short tutorials in explanation of how they’d built this or created that.  In short, a collaborative classified directory of resources that would be helpful to others.

Important note: Please bear with me—I’ll gradually, over the coming months, be moving all my desktop VR teaching and resource documents to this blog, but it will take time.

In the meanwhile, please also consult the old site at:
